Drawing
Animals!!!
Drawing
Animals
is our latest set of lessons. We demonstrate how to build
up drawings of various creatures - a tiger,
horse,
rhino,
parrot,
tropical
fish and beetle
using a range of different media including pencil, colour
pencil, charcoal and chalk, pastels, oil pastels and gouache.
You
can also investigate how artists through the ages have
viewed animals as subjects for their artwork in the Animals
in Art section of our Art
Appreciation unit.
African
Masks !!!
African
Masks - We have doubled the number of mask
examples and visually enhanced the navigation between
them with thumbnail image links. We have also included
interactive maps that indicate the territory of the tribe
associated with each mask.
Graphic
Design !!!
Our
Logo Design and Typography lessons have been updated to
improve their focus and usability.
Logo
Design Lesson concentrates on a range creative techniques
that you can use to develop ideas in graphic design. We
also offer free resources that you can copy and print
for the lesson.
Typography
Lesson examines the elements of the medium and then
uses that knowledge to create a range of logotypes that
explore the expressive link between the visual and the
verbal.
Graphic
Designers, a recent addition to our Art Appreciation
section, introduces you to the work of some famous graphic
designers and illustrates how they have developed their
ideas over the course of their work.
About
Artyfactory
Artyfactory
offers free art and design lessons for artists of any
age. We
are building a growing resource of art lessons, art
history notes, ideas and techniques designed to improve
your artistic skills. Our aim is simply to increase
your enjoyment in creating artworks.
We
now host a wide range of illustrated lessons on African
masks, Egyptian
art, pencil
portraits, acrylic
portraits, drawing
animals, pen
and ink drawing, perspective
drawing, art
appreciation, colour
theory, graphic
design and typography.
Artyfactory
places great importance on teaching art visually as
opposed to verbally. We believe that artists teach themselves
visually first and verbally second. This is why we design
the visuals for each lesson first, to ensure that they
communicate the essence of the lesson in images alone,
before the addition of any text. Step by step images
are used to capture the key stages of each lesson while
each page is carefully designed to reflect or complement
the theme. We believe that our focus on the visual appeal
of the site enhances its usability for a wider audience
and particularly allows those with reading difficulties
to participate to a greater degree.
Although we emphasise the visual qualities of the site,
we also place great importance in the quality of the
written content. The text and illustrations are created
by the same person offering hands-on experience of the
creative process. The function of our text is to supplement
the images with extra information and advice on developing
the appropriate skills and techniques for the lesson
and how to overcome any difficulties that you may encounter.
We also try to enhance the practical side of the work
with appropriate background knowledge of its theme or
some critical evaluation of the subject. Our growing
Art
Appreciation section can be used to expand the context
of many of the lessons.
Who
is Artyfactory?
Artyfactory
is designed, illustrated and written by myself, John
MacTaggart, an art teacher from Glasgow, Scotland. I
graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1974 and
have more than thirty years teaching experience. I sat
down one day with a library book to teach myself something
about web design and just kept on going. Artyfactory
is the result so far.
